Critical text
The work transforms the body into a discontinuous media sequence in which age, identity, and presence can no longer be reassembled into a stable individual. In the Advertising series, Zampogna does not oppose an original experience to its advertising counterfeit. Instead, he shows how both are already organised by cropping, poses, and visual hierarchies. The figures are removed from any legible situation and reduced to fragments that seem to belong to different stages of life. Yet this possible progression through age does not construct a biography. It converts existence into a repertoire of anonymous, interchangeable images.
The division into three horizontal bands separates legs, torso, and faces, making montage the principle that replaces bodily unity. Above and below, violet density holds the figures within dark fields that recall images already printed, while the overexposed central area, almost devoid of coordinates, dissolves the torso into a luminous surface. The hand near the chest retains a sense of bodily proximity, but the radical crop suspends its meaning and prevents it from becoming narrative. Acrylic, screen-printing ink, and oil do not unify these registers. The coexistence of painterly modulation and reproductive imprint makes it uncertain which image belongs to life and which to its media construction.
The work thus takes Zampogna’s reflection on “real reality” and “media reality” beyond the simple juxtaposition of two domains. The advertising device now operates within the perception of the body itself, which can be segmented, isolated, and returned to circulation without preserving a unified memory. What remains is not an identity to be recognised, but a presence distributed among incompatible details. Its reproduction in the volume “Realtà Reale & Realtà Mediale.” confirms the centrality of this threshold within the retrospective reading of his practice.
