Evolution stages change as a formula produced by images, in which lived experience and the advertising model become two interchangeable versions of behaviour. Within the Advertising series, Zampogna does not oppose an authentic document to commercial fiction, but shows how both are already organised to be seen. The title promises a progressive transition, almost a demonstration, while the montage unsettles its certainty: what changes is not only the figures’ action, but the code through which their presence becomes legible. Evolution thus becomes a media mythology, a word capable of assigning direction and value to images that do not, by themselves, compose any necessary story.
The pair of registers turns the variation between displayed gesture and social pose into a sequence that seems to promise a before and an after, without establishing which is more authentic. Above, bodily proximity takes on the demonstrative quality of a scene constructed for visibility; below, the distance between the two presences does not restore a truer everyday reality, but offers another form of representation, restrained and composed. Between the registers, the word “evolution,” first vertical and handwritten, then horizontal and typographic, passes from body to brand: rather than explaining the relationship between the scenes, it disciplines them according to the syntax of the slogan. Acrylic, oil and screen printing ink give material form to this oscillation, bringing painterly modulation and technical reproducibility together without reconciling them in a single language.
The work clarifies a central concern in Zampogna’s research at the end of the 1990s: “real reality” no longer precedes “media reality,” because even private gesture, relationships and identity reach the gaze through forms that have already been coded. The montage makes it impossible to decide whether we are seeing a transformation, a repetition or the replacement of one image by another. This very uncertainty strips the term “evolution” of any neutrality and exposes its ideological function: to name as progress what may be merely a different packaging of the present.
