The work turns observation into an experiment on the instability of reality, showing that the examined body and its media recording now belong to the same apparatus of visibility. Within Advertising, the test evoked by the title does not promise objective verification, but tests the distinction between experience and image. Zampogna places a situation with the character of a clinical examination beside a scene organised by recording, without granting the former greater authenticity. “Real reality” and “media reality” do not confront each other as original and copy: both already appear constructed through poses, instruments, and codes of interpretation.
In the upper register, the handwritten sheet superimposed on the face of the figure wearing glasses turns a possible document into a screen: what should provide information instead removes identity and interrupts the exchange of gazes. The horizontal separation introduces below this scene a red field dominated by the video camera, whose presence makes recording part of the event rather than its subsequent testimony. The pale, almost overexposed range above simulates analytical neutrality, while the red monochrome compresses bodies, equipment, and setting into the same visual substance. Acrylic, oil, and screen printing ink sustain this ambivalence, bringing painterly modulation and reproductive hardness together without resolving them into a unified image.
The work thus carries Zampogna’s research beyond the simple insertion of an advertising fragment into a portrait. Here contamination affects the very act of seeing: observing, examining, and filming become contiguous operations, each capable of producing the subject it claims to record. Even the division into two registers establishes no hierarchy, since each half reveals its own condition in the other. What remains is a scene in which the knowledge promised by the image coincides with a new concealment, and the person can appear only through the apparatuses that make their presence uncertain.
