Within the COVID cycle, waiting becomes the everyday form of restriction: the body remains in public space, yet appears separated from the world and progressively absorbed by its surface. Zampogna does not translate the pandemic into an exceptional episode, but into the silent alteration of an ordinary gesture. Sitting, lingering, and sharing a place are actions that the mask and distancing suddenly make ambiguous. The figure, not identified by the available sources, therefore functions less as an individual portrait than as a presence subjected to a new regime of visibility, in which protection and isolation coincide.

The seated, masked figure is traversed by the fabric’s floral pattern, which weakens its substance and converts sanitary isolation into perceptual instability. The flowers do not merely surround the subject: they reappear across the body and compromise its boundaries, as though the decorative environment could slowly consume its presence. The linear structure of the bench and the lower green band also partition the space, transforming an ordinary pause into an image of regulated access and suspended mobility. The textile support thus acts as critical material. Its domestic decoration contradicts the estrangement of the public scene, while its visual continuity absorbs person, furnishing, and space into a single unstable plane.

The work renews the contamination between “real reality” and “media reality” that runs through Zampogna’s research, but transfers it from the superimposition of images to the very condition of appearing. The pandemic’s most recognizable sign, the mask, is not enough to explain the scene: it is the loss of separation between individual and environment that conveys the vulnerability of that time. What remains is a restrained presence, visible but not fully available, for whom shared space is no longer a place of relation, but a surface of waiting and distance.
