Within the «Scratch & Win» series, the work shows how the promise of luck can occupy identity even before assigning it a prize. Gambling does not appear as an episode separate from life, but as the visual environment within which a person is made legible. Zampogna thus transfers the grammar of the instant ticket onto the portrait: waiting for an outcome concerns not only a possible win, but the very definition of the subject. Individual hope enters a predetermined system in which every image already seems destined for a combination and a process of verification.
The repetition of lucky animals reduces their propitiatory value to a serial repertoire, ready to be counted and compared. Distributed without constructing a scene, the schematic silhouettes turn the background into a device that surrounds the person and conditions how she is read. At the same time, the almost monochrome figure crosses the graphic field without fully dominating it: her scale introduces a singular presence, yet the faintness of her features and the continuity of the paper return her to the same surface as the icons. The result is a suspended identity, both foreign to the game and already absorbed by its code.
The work takes the contamination between «real reality» and «media reality» that runs through Zampogna’s research to a further consequence. Here mediation does not merely overlap the portrait, since it provides the conditions through which the portrait can appear. Luck becomes an ordinary, administered mythology, capable of translating desire into repeatable signs while postponing the moment of its fulfilment. What remains is not the certainty of a prize, but a person exposed to the impersonal promise that is supposed to distinguish her.
