Critical text
The work unsettles the distance between experience and advertising, allowing the promise of immediate pleasure to occupy the same present as a figure consigned to memory. In the Advertising series, Zampogna does not simply oppose a promotional scene to an image foreign to consumption. He makes them mutually legible through the contamination of “real reality” and “media reality” that guides his research after Artmedia. The reference to Algida and Solero therefore functions as more than a commercial citation. It introduces an everyday mythology in which the product organizes gesture, pleasure, and even the visible form of the subject.
The vertical division places the bright field of consumption beside the dark scene of a seated woman, yet the cut establishes neither hierarchy nor temporal sequence. Instead, it produces an unsettling equivalence between two image regimes. The chromatic and bodily emphasis of advertising appears as constructed as the figure now entrusted to monochrome reproduction, while that figure enters the present as an image available for montage. On the advertising side, the frozen explosion replacing the hair and the ice cream suspended before the mouth turn the body into a mechanism of desire. Identity is absorbed by sensory promise until it coincides with the product it was merely supposed to consume.
The work thus clarifies a central passage within Advertising: media reality does not invade an authentic reality that has remained intact, because both are already surfaces that have been selected, isolated, and made interchangeable. The seated woman retains the weight of an unidentified history, but the montage removes any protective distance from her. Conversely, the commercial scene loses its lightness and reveals the violence with which it shapes the body. The result is an image “wiped clean of memory,” not because the past disappears, but because memory and consumption are forced to share the same visual value. The viewer confronts a present in which even the most private experience appears through ready-made codes.
