Critical text
The work turns the contrast between an idealized body and an everyday action into a false alternative, since both already appear organized by the codes of visibility imposed by media communication. Within Advertising, Zampogna no longer overlays a small informational window onto a dominant image, but grants the two registers equal extension and authority. The isolated pose and the encounter between two people therefore do not designate fiction and authenticity respectively. They are parallel forms of display, removed from their contexts and made available to a montage that converts every difference into visual equivalence.
The vertical division juxtaposes the images without constructing narrative continuity between them: the sharp boundary acts as a rupture, but also as the point at which the two fields measure each other. On the left, the bent body, deprived of a recognizable face, pushes the pose toward an almost impersonal condition in which identity coincides with the silhouette offered to the gaze. On the right, the concentrated gestures exchanged between the seated and standing figures might suggest a lived situation, yet the saturated green makes it uniform and returns it as an already filtered surface. The rarefied brightness of the first field and the chromatic density of the second do not separate the phantasmal from the real. They reveal two different techniques for constructing evidence.
The work thus clarifies a decisive stage in Zampogna’s investigation of “real reality” and “media reality.” Mass communication does not appear as an external repertoire invading life, because it has already shaped how a body poses, a gesture becomes legible, and a scene acquires credibility. The coexistence of acrylic, oil, and screen-printing ink also sustains this instability, bringing painterly modulation together with the memory of reproduction without resolving them into a unified language. What remains is not the possibility of choosing which half is more truthful, but the awareness that both depend on the same economy of the gaze.
