Zampogna e Schifano

The work transforms appropriation into a conflict of authority: Schifano’s work retains its identity, but Zampogna redefines its historical and perceptual weight within a new pictorial field. At the inaugural moment of Artmedia, the “sacking” of twentieth-century art is neither respectful quotation nor erasure of the original. Rather, it submits an already recognisable work to another economy of vision. Zampogna treats Schifano as active historical material and places him within a relationship in which attribution, ownership and context cease to be neutral givens.

The broad red field isolates the white rectangle and converts the incorporated work from an autonomous presence into a nucleus subjected to a different visual hierarchy. The disproportion between the two surfaces produces concentration and distance at once: what has been taken acquires centrality, yet also appears confined, almost placed under observation. Within the white, the inscription “1989,” marked by drips, does not function merely as a date. Its coincidence with the year of the work turns the number into a threshold between Schifano’s time and Zampogna’s act, while the surrounding red matter seems to extend its colour and simultaneously deprive it of autonomy. The wood thus supports not a simple juxtaposition, but a physical relationship between works and authorships.

Within Artmedia, appropriation puts the meanings of images already consigned to recent history back into play. Here this principle takes an especially concentrated form: Zampogna does not imitate Schifano’s language, but constructs the conditions for it to be read as fragment, artefact and interlocutor. The work thus anticipates the method of contamination that will run through his later research, when lived reality and media image become interchangeable. What remains for the viewer is an artistic identity that is still legible, yet now inseparable from the device that displays, contains and reactivates it.
