Zampogna e Le Witt IV

The work makes the order of the avant-garde interchangeable with that of merchandise by subjecting the appropriation of LeWitt to the competitive seriality of the sporting goods window. At the intersection of Artmedia and Store Windows, Zampogna does not merely cite a language already codified by art history. He puts it back into play within a commercial apparatus that alters its status. The geometric configuration neither dominates the context nor introduces an alien principle. Instead, it must share the products’ economy of display, in which every form acquires value by being made visible, comparable, and available.

Placed on the same shelf as the balls, the small geometric panel loses the autonomy of an artwork and assumes the ambiguous character of an exhibited article. Its regular grid finds an unstable equivalent in the repeated balls, differentiated by colors, brands, and sporting disciplines: commercial abundance becomes a modular system that both absorbs and contradicts the order attributed to LeWitt. Cibachrome and screen printing do not reconcile the two registers within a settled image. Rather, they make their proximity materially explicit, bringing the photographic allure of the shop window together with the impersonal severity of the appropriated sign.

This forced equivalence marks a decisive passage in Zampogna’s research. Artmedia’s appropriation and “sacking” here anticipate the later contamination of “real reality” and “media reality”: the languages of art and consumption no longer confront each other from separate positions, since both depend on forms of reproduction, recognition, and circulation. The work therefore leaves a precise tension unresolved. The geometry retains the memory of the avant-garde, but the shop window converts it into one visual distinction among others, revealing how readily artistic autonomy can become a mode of commercial value.
