Devil & Angel stages the desire for economic salvation as a prefabricated moral judgement, in which individual choice is absorbed by the grammar of gambling. Within the «Scratch & Win» series, Zampogna does not merely represent the promise of a prize: he shows how the ticket organises experience through simple alternatives, quantifiable rewards and seductive commands. The opposition between damnation and redemption thus assumes the impoverished form of a commercial choice. Even destiny becomes a predetermined combination, while personal hope survives as the expectation of verification.
The monochrome figure, confined between two coloured characters, loses the role of protagonist and becomes the passive ground of their alternative. Her photographic presence retains the density of a real life, yet the frontal stillness and the scale of the mascots surrender her to a device that seems to interpret her in advance. Reduced to smiling, immediately legible emblems, the devil and angel do not embody opposing forces: the drips running through their bodies fracture their graphic cheerfulness, while the small sums attached to each option make good and evil economically equivalent. Acrylic and screen printing ink keep human presence and advertising code in tension, without reconciling them within a coherent scene.
The work carries the contamination between «real reality» and «media reality» towards a symbolic administration of the individual. The lottery no longer promises money alone, but supplies identities, alternatives and even a moral vocabulary, all converted into consumable signs. Here lies the ironic and tragic core of the work: the choice appears free, yet every outcome already belongs to the same system of values and figures. Shown in «Cirkus» in 2007, the work allows a contemporary condition to emerge beneath its playful tone, one in which even salvation is measured as a prize.
