The Roulette turns the promise of choice entrusted to gambling into an already closed device, in which the individual appears free only because he is surrounded by numbered possibilities. In the «Scratch & Win» series, Zampogna carries the grammar of betting beyond the ticket and makes it coincide with the space of experience. The roulette does not illustrate a pastime here, nor does it present risk as a personal adventure. Instead, it offers a model of reality in which desire is translated into combinations, probability and expectation. The young man does not enter the game as its protagonist, but is placed within it as a presence already captured by its codes.
The isolated figure, set beside scattered numbers and graphic signs, is treated as one value among others: his frontal stance does not assert an identity, but exposes a body available for classification. The roulette grid in perspective seems to open a practicable depth, while its tilt and the off-centre wheel turn it into an unstable circuit, governed by rules that remain external to the subject. The word «Giocagiò», with its imperative, childlike tone, also converts a playful invitation into repeated pressure. The visual lightness of the graphics does not weaken the mechanism, but makes it familiar and therefore more pervasive.
The work thus develops one of the critical cores of Zampogna’s research: «media reality» is no longer superimposed on life as a recognisable window, but directly organises its postures, aspirations and measures. In relation to the promise of sudden wealth, the roulette introduces the appearance of decision while leaving the system’s dominance intact. What remains is not the thrill of risk, but a form of immobility disguised as a multiplication of options. The individual may occupy the field of the game without thereby acquiring the power to determine its outcome.
