Numero magico

Numero magico turns luck into a code that promises a personal exception, yet returns the individual to the impersonal logic of gambling. In the Scratch & Win series, Zampogna does not merely depict the expectation of a prize. He adopts the grammar of the lottery as a form capable of organising everyday experience. Invested with an almost propitiatory power, the number should distinguish one destiny from all others. Here, however, its appearance produces no certainty and leaves the promise without an outcome. The media mythology of immediate wealth thus becomes the model for a hope reduced to a combination.

The isolated, enlarged numbered discs remove the signs from the practical function of the ticket and turn them into suspended presences, legible but impossible to verify. Six, three and two seem to provide the elements of a sequence without supplying the rule that could make it decisive. The circular words «NUMERO MAGICO», faded until they merge with the field, retain the assertive tone of promotion while weakening its effect. The almost monochrome figure, hands in pockets, appears detached from this device, yet the shared ground absorbs the person into the same atmosphere as the numbers. Expectation does not take the form of a gesture or an action. It becomes an immobile condition, administered by symbols that promise change without making it possible.

The work draws the contamination between «real reality» and «media reality» into a scene of apparent simplicity. Person and code do not overlap spectacularly, but coexist with a more insidious naturalness: life seems already governed by the serial language that should merely offer it an opportunity. Compared with other works in the series, the graphics become sparse and the rhetoric of the prize gives way to an empty interval between signs. This emptiness reveals the series' tragic irony: the so called magic number does not open a future, but measures the distance between individual desire and the anonymous mechanism that produces it.
