Critical text
The work transforms the adventure promised by treasure into an administered wait, in which individual desire is absorbed by the impersonal code of gambling. In the «Scratch & Win» series, Zampogna does not simply represent the hope of winning, but shows how it organises the perception of ordinary life. The reference to treasure island evokes discovery, risk and a sudden change of fortune; subjected to the commercial grammar of the ticket, however, that horizon contracts into a predetermined sequence of lucky numbers and instructions. Economic catharsis remains possible only as a promise regulated by others.
The ornamental title, enlarged until it dominates the field, retains the appeal of adventure but converts it into a promotional brand beneath which every experience seems already coded. The seated figure introduces an everyday, vulnerable presence, yet numbers, sums and graphic fragments cross its space until the person becomes part of the device. Even the orange patch bearing a conditional instruction does not clarify the possibility of a prize: it suspends it within a formula that demands matching signs. The body thus appears poised between the subject of desire and the surface upon which the game distributes its codes.
The contamination between «real reality» and «media reality», central to Zampogna’s research, here takes the form of mutual dependence. The ticket requires a life onto which it can project its promise, while the figure seems able to imagine change only through the language of winning. Against the rhetoric of adventure invoked by the title, treasure is no longer a elsewhere to be reached, but an outcome anticipated by a commercial system and continually deferred until verification. The work therefore reveals the ironic and tragic core of the series: hope survives, but only in the devalued form of a possible combination.
