Has Our Country Abandoned Them?

The work transforms a humanitarian emergency into a crisis of vision, showing that the ambiguous authority of the media image now stands between the suffering of war and those who observe it. In the Portraits series, begun after the Artmedia experience had ended, Zampogna does not abandon appropriation but transfers it from art history to the contemporary circulation of news. The «Life» cover, associated with the war in Yugoslavia and the condition of children, does not simply document an event. It introduces into the painting the already composed form through which tragedy solicits attention, responsibility and consent.

A dominant red absorbs face and space into a surface without depth, suspending the portrait between individual presence and serial image. The frontal gaze retains a direct relation with the viewer, yet the chromatic reduction removes every setting and makes its function uncertain: witness, recipient of the appeal, or figure likewise produced by the media. The cover overlaps this enlarged presence at the cheek, acting both as a visual window and as an interruption. Its yellow and blue range, the uniform, the child and the printed question condense the war into an immediately legible editorial device. The graphic hardness of the screen-printing ink reinforces the contrast between the silent continuity of the face and the coded urgency of the news.

The work occupies a decisive transition in Zampogna’s research: «real reality» and «media reality» are not yet equivalent in scale, but they have already ceased to be separable. The portrait offers no identity capable of guaranteeing the authenticity of experience, while the magazine cannot return intact the reality it claims to reveal. An unresolved responsibility arises between the two registers: tragedy reaches the viewer only through a public image, and that very mediation risks making it consumable. The cover’s question thus extends beyond its national context and implicates the act of looking itself.
