Critical text
Giocagiò turns the promise of fortune into a system of classification that absorbs individual desire and assigns the person the ambiguous role of both protagonist and stake. In the «Scratch & Win» series, Zampogna does not simply represent the ticket, but expands its grammar until it coincides with the space of experience. The hope for economic change thus survives only within a predetermined language, in which every presence can be associated with a prize, a combination or a value.
The seated figure interrupts the word “jackpot,” yet his passive frontality keeps him subordinate to the promise condensed by that inscription. The body does not command the promotional code. It is held within it like an image already selected, while the partly obscured letters continue to define the scene’s horizon. Around it, the fruit, the title traced above and the “BAR” sign adopt the scattered graphics of a commercial and popular repertoire. These signs do not construct a coherent setting, but reduce everyday life to a combination of immediately legible emblems. The paper also contributes to this instability: its modest surface preserves the precariousness of promotional material and physically contradicts the emphasis of the announced prize.
The work therefore brings the contamination between “real reality” and “media reality” into the very structure of identity. The individual remains recognisable, but no longer possesses a space outside the game, since even his pose appears subject to the impersonal logic of allocation. The irony of the title and symbols retains a precise gravity: fortune does not open a possibility, but gives hope a standardised and consumable form. In this equivalence between person, sign and prize, Zampogna identifies a contemporary condition in which desire continues to operate precisely because it has already been converted into an image.
